The Basics
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is a national credentialing exam administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Passing it earns you the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) designation. Many employers require or strongly prefer certification.
Exam Structure
The PTCE is computer-based and multiple-choice. You answer scored questions along with unscored pretest questions used for future exam development. Treat every question with the same focus since you cannot tell which are scored.
The Four Knowledge Domains
- Medications - the largest domain, covering drug classes, dosage forms, brand/generic names, and pharmacology
- Federal Requirements - controlled substance schedules, prescription requirements, regulatory bodies
- Patient Safety and Quality Assurance - error prevention, high-alert medications, quality improvement
- Order Entry and Processing - prescription processing, calculations, inventory management
