Why Antibiotics Matter on the Exam
Antibiotics are heavily prescribed, and the Medications domain expects you to recognize common classes, general uses, and counseling points.
Penicillins
Amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanate (Augmentin) are among the most commonly dispensed antibiotics. Penicillin allergy is an important flag for pharmacy staff during order entry.
Cephalosporins
Organized into generations with broader coverage in later generations. Cephalexin (Keflex) is a common first-generation option for skin infections.
Macrolides
Azithromycin (Zithromax) and clarithromycin (Biaxin) are often chosen for patients with penicillin allergies. The "Z-Pak" dosing course is worth remembering.
Fluoroquinolones
Ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin are used for urinary tract and respiratory infections. They have interaction concerns with dairy products and certain minerals.
Tetracyclines
Doxycycline is widely used for acne and certain tick-borne illnesses. Like fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines interact with calcium, iron, and antacids.
Sulfonamides
Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Bactrim) is frequently used for urinary tract infections. Sulfa allergies are another important flag during data entry.
Study Strategy
Group medications by class and look for patterns. Build a simple table with class, example generic name, brand name, and one counseling point. This turns a huge topic into a manageable study tool.
