Focus Fades During Long Exams
Maintaining concentration for the full duration of the PTCE is a challenge. Your brain naturally experiences focus fluctuations, and the pressure of a timed test can accelerate mental fatigue. Having strategies to maintain and restore focus during the exam can protect your score.
Start Strong
The beginning of the exam is when your focus is sharpest. Use this peak attention period wisely by engaging fully with each question. Do not rush through early questions just because you feel alert. Careful reading from the start prevents careless errors that are harder to catch later.
Recognize When Focus Drops
If you notice you are reading the same question multiple times, selecting answers without really thinking, or feeling your mind drift to unrelated thoughts, your focus has dropped. Recognizing this is the first step to correcting it.
Quick Reset Techniques
- Take three slow, deep breaths
- Close your eyes for five seconds
- Stretch your shoulders and neck briefly
- Refocus your eyes by looking away from the screen momentarily
- Remind yourself of your preparation and why you are here
Pacing Supports Focus
Good pacing prevents both rushing and dragging. When you move through questions at a steady, comfortable pace, you avoid the panic of falling behind and the boredom of going too slowly. Both extremes drain focus faster than a measured approach.
Save Difficult Questions for Later
If you hit a question that threatens your momentum, flag it and move on. Struggling with a single question can create a focus spiral where frustration carries over into subsequent questions. Return to flagged questions when you have finished the rest and can approach them with fresh eyes.
