Two Paths to Certification
There are two nationally recognized pharmacy technician certification exams: the PTCE administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the ExCPT administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Both lead to a recognized certification, but they differ in some important ways.
The PTCE
The PTCE is the more widely recognized exam and is accepted in all states that require or recognize pharmacy technician certification. It covers four knowledge domains with a focus on medications, federal requirements, patient safety, and order entry. The PTCB also offers specialty certifications for technicians who want to demonstrate advanced competency.
The ExCPT
The ExCPT is an alternative certification path that covers similar content areas including pharmacy regulations, medication management, and pharmacy operations. It is accepted in many but not all states. Check your state's requirements to confirm whether ExCPT certification is recognized where you plan to work.

Which Should You Choose
For most candidates, the PTCE is the safer choice because of its broader recognition. If your employer or state specifically accepts or prefers the ExCPT, it remains a valid option. Research your state's requirements and your target employer's preferences before deciding. The study material for both exams overlaps significantly, so your preparation will be useful regardless of which exam you ultimately choose.
