How Scores Are Calculated
The PTCE uses a scaled scoring system. Your raw score is converted to a scaled score that accounts for question difficulty, ensuring fairness across different test forms.
Passing Score
The PTCB sets a passing threshold on the scaled score. You receive a pass or fail result along with a domain breakdown. If you do not pass, the breakdown helps you focus study for a retake.
Unscored Questions
A small number of questions are unscored pretest items. You will not know which ones, so treat every question as if it counts.
No Penalty for Guessing
Your score is based only on correct responses. Never leave a question blank. Even a random guess gives you a chance, while blank guarantees zero credit.
What Your Score Report Shows
Your report includes your overall scaled score and performance in each of the four knowledge domains. This is valuable even if you pass, highlighting areas for continued learning as you begin your career.
Preparing With Scoring in Mind
Since there is no guessing penalty, never leave a question unanswered. Since all four domains are tested, make sure your study plan addresses all of them rather than focusing exclusively on your strongest area. A balanced approach gives you the best chance of reaching the passing threshold.
