PTCE Computer-Based Testing Tips

How to navigate the computer testing interface on exam day.

April 30, 2026

The CBT Format

The PTCE is delivered as a computer-based test (CBT) at authorized testing centers. If you have never taken a computer-based exam, understanding the interface in advance can reduce anxiety on test day.

Navigation Basics

The testing interface displays one question at a time. You select your answer by clicking on the corresponding option. Navigation buttons allow you to move forward to the next question and, in most cases, go back to previous questions. A progress indicator shows how many questions you have completed out of the total.

Flagging Questions

Most CBT platforms allow you to flag questions you want to return to later. Use this feature for questions where you are unsure and want a second look after completing the rest of the exam. Flagging takes a single click and does not affect your score.

The On-Screen Calculator

An on-screen calculator may be available in addition to or instead of a physical calculator. Practice using an on-screen calculator during your study sessions so the interface feels familiar on exam day. On-screen calculators are operated by clicking buttons rather than pressing physical keys.

Time Display

The remaining time is typically displayed on screen throughout the exam. Use it for pacing checkpoints but avoid watching it constantly, which can increase anxiety. Glance at it at predetermined intervals to confirm you are on pace.

Technical Issues

If you experience a technical problem during the exam, such as the screen freezing or an unresponsive interface, notify the testing center staff immediately. They are trained to handle technical issues. Do not try to fix problems yourself by clicking randomly or restarting the computer.

Before You Start

Most testing centers offer a brief tutorial on the interface before the exam begins. Take advantage of this tutorial even if you are familiar with computer-based testing. It only takes a few minutes and ensures you understand the specific platform being used.
