PTCB Recertification Requirements

What you need to do to keep your CPhT credential active.

January 29, 2026

Certification Requires Maintenance

Passing the PTCE is a significant achievement, but the credential requires ongoing maintenance. You must complete continuing education hours and pay a recertification fee during each cycle to keep certification active. Letting it lapse can affect employment and may require retaking the exam.

Continuing Education Hours

During each cycle, you must complete CE hours in pharmacy technician-related topics from accredited providers. A portion must cover specific content areas. Check the PTCB website for current requirements.

Where to Earn CE

  • Online pharmacy education platforms
  • Professional pharmacy organizations
  • Employer-provided training
  • Pharmacy conferences and seminars
  • College-based programs

Many options are free, especially through large employers. Ensure programs are ACPE-accredited for PTCB credit.

Submitting Recertification

Before certification expires, submit your application through the PTCB website with documented CE hours and the fee. The PTCB may audit applications, so keep certificates of completion.

Planning Ahead

Do not wait until the last months to earn CE hours. Spreading education throughout the cycle is less stressful and allows you to choose genuinely interesting topics. Set reminders to check progress at regular intervals.
