What Is Interleaving
Interleaving means mixing different topics or problem types within a single study session rather than studying one topic exhaustively before moving to the next. Instead of spending an entire session on cardiovascular drugs, you might alternate between cardiovascular drugs, pharmacy law questions, and dosage calculations.
Why It Feels Harder
Interleaving feels less productive than focused study because switching between topics creates a sense of disruption. You cannot settle into a comfortable rhythm with one subject. However, research consistently shows that this difficulty is exactly what makes interleaving effective. The extra mental effort required to switch between topics strengthens your ability to retrieve and apply knowledge flexibly.
How It Helps With the PTCE
The PTCE does not group questions by topic. You might answer a drug classification question followed by a calculation question followed by a law question. If you have only practiced topics in isolation, the random order of exam questions can feel disorienting. Interleaved study prepares you for this mixed format.
How to Implement It
- Divide each study session into three or four topic blocks of 15 to 20 minutes each
- Choose topics from different domains for each block
- Include at least one calculation practice block per session
- Alternate between memorization tasks and problem-solving tasks
Combining With Other Techniques
Interleaving works well alongside spaced repetition and active recall. Use spaced repetition to schedule which topics to review, interleave them within each session, and practice active recall within each topic block. This combination creates a study approach that is harder in the moment but produces stronger, more durable learning.
