Who Can Take the PTCE

The PTCB has eligibility requirements that candidates must meet before taking the PTCE. These requirements are designed to ensure that candidates have a foundational level of education and training appropriate for pharmacy technician certification.

Education Requirements

Candidates must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Additionally, the PTCB requires completion of one of several pathways:

  • Completion of a PTCB-recognized pharmacy technician education program
  • Equivalent pharmacy-related experience or training as specified by the PTCB

Check the PTCB website for the most current eligibility pathways, as requirements can be updated.

Background Requirements

The PTCB application includes background disclosure questions. Certain criminal convictions or disciplinary actions may affect eligibility. The PTCB reviews each case individually and has a process for evaluating disclosures.

Age Requirements

Candidates must be at least 18 years old to apply for PTCB certification.

Verifying Your Eligibility

Before investing time in exam preparation, confirm that you meet all eligibility requirements. Visit the PTCB website for the most current information, as requirements can change. If you are unsure whether your educational background qualifies, contact the PTCB directly for clarification.

International Candidates

The PTCE is designed for practice in the United States and covers U.S. federal regulations and practice standards. International candidates should verify that they meet the education and eligibility requirements before applying.

Preparing for Application

Gather your educational transcripts, training program documentation, and employment records before starting the application. Having everything ready streamlines the process and avoids delays.
