Drug Interactions: What Pharmacy Techs Need to Know

What Are Drug Interactions

A drug interaction occurs when one substance affects the activity of another when both are administered together. Interactions can occur between two prescription medications, between a prescription drug and an OTC product, or between a medication and food or supplements. The PTCE tests your awareness of common interactions and the role pharmacy technicians play in identifying them.

Types of Interactions

  • Drug-drug interactions - when two medications interact with each other
  • Drug-food interactions - when food or beverages affect medication absorption or effectiveness
  • Drug-supplement interactions - when dietary supplements affect prescription medications

Common Interactions to Know

  • Warfarin and vitamin K-rich foods - vitamin K can reduce warfarin's effectiveness
  • Tetracyclines and dairy/calcium - calcium reduces antibiotic absorption
  • Fluoroquinolones and minerals - similar absorption issues with calcium, iron, and antacids
  • Levothyroxine and calcium/iron - should be separated by several hours
  • MAOIs and tyramine-containing foods - can cause dangerous blood pressure increases

The Technician's Role

Pharmacy software systems flag potential interactions during prescription processing. When the system generates an interaction alert, the pharmacy technician should bring it to the pharmacist's attention for clinical evaluation. The pharmacist decides whether the interaction requires action, but the technician's awareness and communication are essential.

Allergy Screening

Drug allergies are a special type of interaction concern. During prescription entry, technicians verify patient allergy information and flag any matches between documented allergies and prescribed medications. This is a critical safety checkpoint.

Exam Focus

The PTCE may ask about common interactions, the technician's role when an interaction is flagged, and the importance of allergy screening during prescription processing. Focus on understanding the general principles and the most commonly tested interaction examples.
