Automation in Modern Pharmacy Practice

How technology and automation are changing pharmacy technician roles.

March 6, 2026

Technology in the Pharmacy

Modern pharmacies use a range of automated systems to improve accuracy, efficiency, and safety. Understanding these technologies is relevant to the PTCE and gives you practical knowledge for the workplace.

Automated Dispensing Cabinets

These secure storage units are commonly used in hospitals, placed on nursing floors to provide nurses with immediate access to medications. Pharmacy technicians restock these machines, verify contents, and troubleshoot issues. The cabinets track inventory, require user authentication, and maintain audit trails for controlled substances.

Robotic Dispensing Systems

Some retail and mail-order pharmacies use robotic systems that count and bottle medications automatically. These robots handle high-volume medications, freeing technicians to focus on tasks that require human judgment like insurance resolution and patient interaction.

Barcode Scanning

Barcode verification during the filling process is a major safety feature. The technician scans the medication bottle and the system verifies it matches the prescription. This technology has significantly reduced selection errors where the wrong medication or strength is accidentally dispensed.

Electronic Prescribing

E-prescribing has largely replaced handwritten and faxed prescriptions in many practice settings. Electronic prescriptions reduce errors from illegible handwriting and improve workflow efficiency. Technicians must be comfortable working with e-prescribing systems and resolving issues when electronic orders do not process correctly.

Impact on Technician Roles

Automation has not eliminated pharmacy technician jobs. Instead, it has shifted the focus away from routine counting and toward more complex tasks like compounding, inventory management, insurance resolution, and patient support. Technicians who embrace technology and adapt to changing workflows position themselves well for career growth.
